From Harman's "Prince of Networks: Bruno Latour and Metaphysics", p35:
"One of Latour's virtues is his refusal to focus on a single magical gap between thinking, practical, moody humans on the one hand and stupefied inanimate clods of matter on the other. The problem of communication is raised anew by Latour as soon as he grants full democratic rights to all actors in the cosmos, denying that any of them contain the others. His actors are all mutually external. His own answer as to how actants communicate is through translation. Things do not touch one another if left just as we found them. They need interfaces in order to touch, and to build an interface requires labour. Ultimately, this requires the appearance of a new entity through which the two communicating terms are joined, however briefly. This problem entails the same model of human thought encountered in the previous chapter: namely, there is no such thing as 'thinking' as a special critical transcendence that leaps beyond the world and reflexively sees things 'as' they are. Instead, the relation between my mind and the room is metaphysically no different from the relation between the computer and the desk within that room. In both cases, there is a problem of communication between two actants vested with full autonomous rights."
